The Virginia Hot Springs Building Company recently completed construction on the first antique log cabin at Homestead Preserve in the community’s Sheep Meadow neighborhood adjacent to The Homestead. The home is the first in a series of historically inspired log cabins Homestead Preserve has begun constructing this year.
A second antique log cabin is still under construction in Homestead Preserve’s Delafield Rise neighborhood and should be complete by fall. Both homes have been built using reclaimed oak logs from cabins in Pennsylvania and Canada. The homes also feature reclaimed oak floors, native fieldstone fireplaces and foundations, as well as shake and standing seam metal roofs.
The antique log homes, which are both available for occupancy through Homestead Preserve’s recently introduced Charter Home program, reflect the primary commitments of the community—to build homes that blend into the surrounding landscape and reflect the rich architectural history of the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia. “These houses strike a chord,” says VHS Building Company Construction Supervisor John Airgood. “The houses just fit here, and they have a story.”
Homestead Preserve developers Charles Adams and partner Don Killoren were instrumental in the design and development of Celebration, Florida, near Orlando, which was hailed as the “Most Advanced Community in the Country from 1996-1998” by The Guinness Book of World Records. Crosland, Inc. of Charlotte, NC is a financial partner in Homestead Preserve, and Crosland’s President and CEO Todd Mansfield was also directly involved in the development and success of Celebration, Florida. Crosland, Inc. is one of the Southeast’s leading and most diversified real estate companies.
